When choosing a drywall texture sprayer it is important to evaluate the capabilities and strength of each pump. In our TOP PORTABLES GET RATED chart (see below), the strongest pump receives a 5, representing the pump pressure/volume over the length of hose along with the smallest amount of thinning required.

Subsequently lower scoring pumps require increased material thinning for the supplied length of hose. The types of textures that can be sprayed are linked to the overall pump rating. Knockdown textures are the most difficult to spray because of the thickness of the material required. Most of the pumps will spray a Knockdown texture (unless marked 0), but may require a thinner material than sprayed through a standard hopper gun.

We recommend that customers exclusively spraying knockdown textures choose a machine rated 4 and above in the knockdown category. Acoustic or "popcorn" textures require a rating of 3 or better, and must be mixed in complete bag quantities and regularly agitated in the hopper. All of the pumps will spray a wide array of orange peel textures. The "Usage" category is intended to clarify the amount of usage expected on each machine: 5 being the heaviest duty or everyday use, and 1 being light duty or infrequent use.
